What is sequin embroidery

Sequins are a type of embellishment used to decorate fabrics for embellishments. Initially, this embroidery was done using metallic disc shaped beads that are quite flat that are made in many different colours and shapes. But nowadays plastic is largely used. Sequins work on fabrics give greater shine and gleam for the attire.

The origin of the sequins is not exactly known but it is definitely popularized in the gulf countries. Earlier Arabs used to embellish their veils , their mouth pieces or niqabs or men on their islamic caps and women on their head ornaments with gold sequins in black fabrics, mostly indicating their wealth and rich hierarchy but overtime sequins work got popularised and travelled around the world and used to create all type of attires and in all type of items including upholsteries and decorations. The word ‘sequin’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘sikka’ which means coin. Today sequins, also called spangles or diamantes, are used to ornament clothes all around the world. Modern sequins are usually made of plastic, and there are literally dozens of geometrical shapes to choose from: circle, or round, square, rectangular, flowers, stars, snowflakes, polygon, oval, etc.

They look ultramodern and stylish no matter what you sew them into: a boxy satin or silk kurta or kurti with sequin work as same shade as the fabric, a pair of cigarette pants or Patiala or sharara or gharara or palazzo pants in sequin embroideries or a chic jacket style salwar kameez, with jackets worked in sequins. Every designer making sequin salwar kameez use two variations: All-over sequin embroideries (which can get quite heavy!) and Random sequins like the scattered stars in the night sky. These shiny pieces can accentuate some areas or outline the entire pattern of the fabric depends upon your choice . Sequin can be stitched on any fabric from the most delicate fabrics like net, organza, tulle, georgette, chiffon to the heavier base like velvet, silk, satin, crepe etc. And sequin embroidery goes extremely well with beads and stones. They also go well with thread embroideries and lace salwar kameez like in sequin pakistani salwar suits. For day wear, any sequin clothing in muted shades and matte-finish sequins looks more understated. The shinier the sequins, the more suited they are for evening, in venues with lower lighting.

The recent trend in sequin embroidery is the Two Toned Sequins, which means that the two sides of each disk are different in color. These are the so-called reversible sequin fabrics, also known as Mermaid sequins. The best thing about such materials is that one can actually write or draw on them, creating one-of-a-kind designs in salwar kameez or sarees.

An absolute wow, this style satisfies an eternal woman’s desire to look different every time she puts on the same dress. By sweeping your hand over, you can change the color and the design, there is one glossy side and one matte side that will add extra glamour and oomph to your evening looks. Any salwar kameez design can be made using mermaid sequins or for that matter any sequin work. These can come in a variety of cuts and lengths. If all-over sequins are not your thing, consider placing an accent on the areas you want to sparkle: sleeves, neckline, borders of the hemlines , dupatta borders or scattered all over dupattas and so on.

Sequins are classified into four main types: Matte sequins, Hologram sequins, Pearl sequins, and Coated sequins. Coated sequins look very similar to matte sequins but, whereas you can safely wash garments decorated with matte sequins, color coating applied only to the surface of a sequin tends to eventually wear out on frequently washed garments. A skillful designer knows that these little flakes can complete the look of the garment and turn a boring dress into a fabulous masterpiece. Don’t forget that less is more though. Sequin Salwar Kameez are great embellishment as itself or with other indian embroidery works mixed on your preferred materials if you have a good idea in mind.
